A misty stage, filled with ferns. The scent of boggy soil and the buzzing of insects. Welcome way down south in the US, welcome to the swamp. ‘Ghost’ features a parade of zombies, of mutated bodies and faces in white make-up who personify American stereotypes we have come to know from films and television series: the semi-bald pervert, the big momma, the boy scout, the negro practicing voodoo, the bearded bohemian, the Southern belle. With incredible transformational ability, the actors slip from one character into another.

Abattoir Fermé’s ‘Ghost’ was inspired by a road trip through Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi. The ‘dark South’ of long-lived slavery, where racism is still rampant and dark voodoo is interspersed with Christian immersion baptisms. ‘Ghost’ preaches salvation, while killing all innocence.

While ‘Ghost’ is a visual piece - at the most, the actors hum - massive credit goes out to Kreng’s stunningly powerful soundscore. Highly evocative and subtly ominous, it pulls the viewer right into the marsh from the very first second. A muzak version of ‘Stranger in the night’ echoes through a saleswoman’s telephone, elsewhere ‘Summertime’ is trumpetting. Cinematic text snippets, blues and bluegrass waft in and out. Past and present become indistinguishable as we are sucked into a downward spiral. Zombies, David Lynch, Tennessee Williams and ‘O Brother, Where -Art Thou’ are all neighbours in Stef Lernous’ unique theatrical universe.

Abattoir Fermé delivers an estranging yet familiar portrait of America. ‘Ghost’ goes beyond visual esthetics, it is also a social critique and attests to a remarkably compassionate worldview. Near the end, a tiny bit too many visual extras interrupt the atmosphere. But apart from that minor slip, ‘Ghost’ is an intoxicating trip.

The best viewing angle so as not to miss anything of Stef Lernous’ theatrical road trip to the Southern States of the US, is on the edge of one’s seat. From the very first second, Abattoir Fermé’s ‘Ghost’ holds the spectator in a firm grip. Suggestive sounds and compelling music support an uncanny scenography that features bizarre characters who do not reveal their mysteries straight away.

A curiously fresh odour is wafting inside NONA’s theatre hall. Once the artificial mist has been lifted and our view is cleared, we can see how the whole stage is taken up by large ferns. An invisible water bird breaks through the silence. Out of nowhere, a young woman emerges, her mouth open in wonder. It is an idyllic view. However, like the other three characters, she will undergo several transformations later on in the play. For such purpose, Abattoir Fermé uses prosthetics that drastically alter the performers’ bodies and statures. Transvestism and drag will rise to monstrous proportions.

Little is revealed about the characters’ relations to one another. The performers prefer to remain silent. The spare snippets of speech we hear, find their origins in old films and forgotten radio plays. There is a ghastly tension whenever a character strikes a threatening pose. Especially the Turkish actor (Çağlar Yiğitoğulları), who recently joined the ranks of Abattoir Fermé, takes up this role. The characters seem to be leading hidden lives in the marshes. When one of them goes to check if the woman inside the wooden cabin is ‘available’, he is pushed aside. The ramshackle building is demolished as a vengeful response.

The refined choice of music seamlessly accompanies this virtual road trip through the ‘black states’ of Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi. Along with incidental music like railroad passages from country records, the tempo of the performance rises in a compelling fashion. Contagious gospel tunes with repetitive pleas build up to an unparallelled climax. But not long after this enthralment, we are startled back into reality. A gruesome scene of useless violence takes place, only to be re-enacted by puppeteers in the grotesque tradition of grand guignol.

As in ‘Apocalypso’ and ‘A Brief History of Hell’ (recently selected for the Dutch Theater Festival), Stef Lernous and his actors reach an extraordinarily high level of performance quality, using techniques of mime and ritual.

Abattoir Fermé’s satirische kijk op het kunstbedrijf werd geselecteerd voor het Nederlands Theaterfestival als een van de tien beste voorstellingen van het afgelopen seizoen. Abattoir Fermé liet zich voor GHOST inspireren door indrukken en momentopnamen van een roadtrip door Georgia, Louisiana en Missisippi. Geen pure fictie dus, maar eerder documentair materiaal gezeefd door de mystificerende filter van Abattoir Fermé.
GHOST wordt een visuele reis langsheen dolende geesten en mysterieuze gespreksflarden, recht naar het moeras dat het geheugen van het Amerikaanse zuiden verbergt.

Somewhere in space there is a girl. And somewhere in that girl there is a space.
Forces that are not of this plane of existence try to find an entrance to this girl.
To see what makes her tick. To see what makes us tick.

‘Entrance’ or ‘en trance’ (in a trance) is a 30 minute solo for dancer Sung-Im Her, directed by Stef Lernous. The solo combines contemporary dance with elements from the ‘abattoir-verse’, such as ritual, religion and outsider-art.

Sung-Im and Stef have worked together on several occasions, from the theatre play ‘Monkey’ to the TV-series ‘MONSTER!’. They have remained good friends. At least until now.

‘Entrance’ premiers in June 2013 in Seoul.

“Dat het Lotti menens is om serieus genomen te worden, is ook te merken aan het originele, sterke podiumconcept dat door Abattoir Fermé uitgedacht werd. De band speelt in een huiskamer die de leden betreden langs een deur en door de spleten van de muur valt het licht naar binnen, iets wat zijn effect niet mist. (…)
Een hoger muzikaal niveau wordt op geen enkele Vlaamse tournee gehaald deze lente. Dit is geen opgestoken middelvinger meer naar de boekskes of Lotti’s vorige muzikale leven, dit is een regelrechte aanval op het muzikale hokjesdenken waar Vlaanderen nog steeds moeilijk vanaf geraakt.Laat u verrassen. De titel van comeback van het jaar is voor Bowie, in onze contreien gaat die van metamorfose en verrassing van het jaar naar Helmut Lotti.”

“Met een stevig, bij momenten erg ruig en luid concert lied Helmut Lotti in een volle Roma weten dat hij zijn comeback helemaal zelf regisseert.
Na vier jaar afwezigheid maakt hij een comeback in een nieuwe gedaante: hij schreef al zijn nieuwe songs zelf, op zoek naar meer voldoening als scheppend artiest, en hij omringt zich met kerels uit alternatieve muziekkringen. Het decor is gemaakt door Stef Lernous van Abattoir Fermé, een theatergezelschap dat zich graag buigt over huiver en angst. Om dat allemaal ineen te laten klikken heeft Lotti gekozen voor een dramatische insteek. Alle songs vertellen verhalen over de pijlen en slagen van de liefde. Het decor vertelt hetzelfde verhaal. We bevinden ons in een transitplek, verbeeld door wankele muren en een beschadigd dak en afbladderend behang… Het is het verhaal van de innerlijke wereld van een man als Lotti zelf. In zo’n decor kunnen enkel gemeende, eigen emoties tot hun recht komen en daar geeft Lotti zich vanaf de eerste seconde aan over. (…)
Het gaat ook in crescendo, met een steeds ruigere klank naar het einde toe, met songs als ‘Angst’ en ‘God’s gonna cut you down’. Dan staat Lotti niet meer te heupwiegen als een Vlaamse Elvis, maar zit hij helemaal vastgeketend in de sound van zijn band, die de groove als een verpletterende golf laat aanzwellen, met krijsende solo’s in een muur van chaos. (…) Dit is geen fluwelen entertainer meer, maar een Vlaamse bluesman die zich voortbeweegt in het kielzog van The Rolling Stones.”

"Het is ons donkere kantje dat ons samenbracht" (Helmut Lotti)

Na de release van “MIJN HART & MIJN LIJF”, ‘s mans nieuwe én meest persoonlijke album tot nog toe, telt Helmut Lotti opnieuw de dagen af, want vanaf 8 maart gaat hij - samen met enkele van Vlaanderens fijnste muzikanten - op tournee.

Abattoir Fermé tekent voor decor, licht en de visuele sfeer van Lotti’s concertreeks.

Helmut leerde het werk van Abattoir kennen via voorstellingen als ‘Phantasmapolis’ en ‘Monkey’. De beelden, sfeer en scenografie bleken naadloos aan te sluiten bij het speels-macabere karakter van Lotti’s nieuwe plaat en een verbond kon niet uitblijven…

Stef Lernous: “Ik zie onze samenwerking als het dramatiseren van Helmuts liedjes via licht en decor… “MIJN HART & MIJN LIJF” is zo persoonlijk dat je niet van buitenaf kan staan luisteren. Je wordt in een wereld gezogen, alsof een oude, mooie woning zijn deur opent en iedereen welkom heet.”
